“The ads that Statiq produced grabbed a significant amount of the ad spend" — How Mail Order Mystery broke a ten-year in-house creative loop with Statiq

Meet Mail Order Mystery

Mail Order Mystery sells personalized mystery experiences for kids, delivered by mail. Every child gets letters addressed to them from characters inside the story, plus ciphers, codes, and clues to work through. Solving the mystery earns them a surprise for completing the mission. Co-founder Chris Boyce and his wife, a writer, built the concept about ten years ago, looking for an analog alternative to screen time that still felt as immersive.

For most of that decade, creative ran almost entirely in-house, with Chris writing the copy, doing the design, and buying the media himself. Freelancers filled occasional gaps, but the range of concepts stayed limited to what one small, closely-knit team could produce.

The Problem

What was going wrong?

Mail Order Mystery was never short on creative ability. The constraint was range. A decade of building everything in-house had produced one very consistent idea of what the product was and how to position it, and every new ad was another version of that idea.

01
Ten years in-house had narrowed the account to a single point of view on the product
02
Iterations kept shipping, but they were iterations of things that already existed
03
Meta's appetite for volume had outgrown what one in-house team could produce and test
04
Riskier concepts cost the same hours as safe ones, so the risky ones never got made
05
The brand was built on statics but had shifted toward video, leaving the static side thin
The Solution

How Statiq turned it around

Statiq plugged into the existing process rather than replacing it. Chris kept strategy and brand ownership; Statiq took on concepting, copy and design for the static layer.

Week 1

Onboarding & first creative wave

Brand voice and category guardrails transferred in a short, structured window. No multi-week discovery. The first batch landed on brand and on strategy.

Weeks 2–4

Volume that pays for risk

With a pipeline behind the account, concepts outside the usual comfort zone finally got made. Angles came from print campaigns and other markets, not just competitor ad libraries.

Ongoing

Scale the winners, keep testing

Proven concepts get iterated while net-new tests run in parallel. AI assists with copy and design, but never runs the creative end to end.

The Results

Mail Order Mystery has spent over $500k behind Statiq creatives this year. In peak weeks, well over half of the account's spend has sat on ads the Statiq team produced. Several of the top performers were angles Chris says he wouldn't have predicted.

Chris's bar for recommending a partner is simple: does it deliver, and is it easy to work with. On both counts, he says Statiq delivered exactly what it promised.
